Statement on DOL’s Overtime Rule

From Josh Ulman, Chief Government Relations Officer, CUPA-HR

While we appreciate that the department did not impose a dramatic increase within 60 days as it proposed, and believe the minimum salary increase to $43,888 is reasonable, we remain very concerned with other aspects of the rule. Specifically, the department should allow employers greater time to implement the rule’s increase of $43,888, and we will ask the department to extend the deadline for this change from July 1, 2024 to September 1, 2024. In addition, the January 1, 2025 increase to the salary threshold to $58,656 and automatic updates will result in regular mass reclassification of workers, which will have a significant negative impact on institutions and many workers, who may lose work flexibility. We will ask the department to abandon these aspects of the rule.
