Susan Norton, senior associate vice president for human resources and CHRO at the University of Alabama, has been selected to receive the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) 2023 Donald E. Dickason Award. This award, named for the association’s founder, is CUPA-HR’s highest honor, recognizing an individual for exceptional leadership and service to CUPA-HR and higher education human resources. Thanks to the generous support of TIAA, CUPA-HR is pleased to offer an $8,000 contribution to the institution of Susan’s choice.

Norton, a long-time member of CUPA-HR, served as chair of the board of directors during the 2020-21 fiscal year, helping lead the association through the pandemic. Prior to her election as chair of the board, she served in many association leadership roles including chair of the Research Advisory Committee; member of the Public Policy and Budget and Finance Committees; and participant in the Emerging CUPA-HR Leaders program. She also served as board operations coordinator for the Southern Region board of directors and has frequently presented and served as a conference ambassador at CUPA-HR conferences. She continues to serve as a leader of the Emerging CUPA-HR Leaders program and as CUPA-HR’s representative to the Association of College and University Housing Administrators-International (ACUHO-I) board of directors.

“Susan is an outstanding leader of leaders. I am particularly grateful for her leadership and partnership during the pandemic,” commented Dr. Andy Brantley, CUPA-HR’s president and CEO.

Dr. Ale Kennedy, associate vice president and chief HR officer at Clemson University and current CUPA-HR national board member shares, “Not only has Susan served in various CUPA-HR leadership roles and is a well-known resource in higher education human resources, but she also exemplifies leadership through her actions and willingness to help others.
