Higher education is undergoing a massive shift in its workforce. As baby boomers retire and are replaced by millennials and Generation Z, institutions risk systematically losing important knowledge and historical context needed for efficient and effective operations. We will explore the changing workforce and the four key components of institutional succession planning, including:
- Developing a strategic workforce plan based on existing population data to proactively understand areas where the organization will be changing
- Developing deep candidate pipelines for at-risk positions and selecting new employees, through strategic recruiting, with skills and behaviors to succeed
- Identifying high potential and high performing individuals that can fill at-risk positions and rewarding them through retention strategies
- Creating comprehensive training and professional workforce development programs to ensure the new workforce is ready to assume responsibility for critical positions throughout the organization
