Daniele Struppa, President of Chapman University, Receives CUPA-HR’s Chief Executive HR Champion Award
Dr. Daniele Struppa, president of Chapman University, has received the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) 2021 Chief Executive HR Champion Award.
Recognizing that what makes an institution great are its people, this award honors a president or chancellor of a higher education institution or system who has demonstrated significant support for the institution’s human resources function. Thanks to the generous support of Segal, CUPA-HR is pleased to offer an $8,000 contribution to the Chapman University program of President Struppa’s choice.
In 2017, President Struppa embarked upon a bold initiative known as “The Chapman Experience,” designed with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and community partners in mind. In 2018, after collecting input from these constituents, President Struppa made a strategic decision that showcased his people-centric approach to leadership: he asked his chief HR officer to be the executive sponsor of the initiative. His goal was to make Chapman a place “people fight to get into, love to support, don’t want to leave, and never forget!” Not only did he signal to the campus that HR was uniquely positioned to enhance the employee and student experience, he also ensured that the project had the staffing and resources needed to be successful.
President Struppa has also demonstrated strong advocacy in the areas of campus culture and diversity. Working with HR, he directed both faculty and staff hiring centers to amplify diversity hiring and promotion to create the most inclusive and reflective community the university has seen to date. He asked for measurements of success, and when barriers were identified, he removed obstacles and invested as needed. Under his leadership, the institution also created a new chief diversity officer position to champion a culture of inclusion and diversity. For these and many other accomplishments supporting HR and employee engagement, he is the deserving recipient of the Chief Executive HR Champion Award.
