Rebecca Bergman, President of Gustavus Adolphus College, Receives CUPA-HR’s Chief Executive HR Champion Award

Rebecca Bergman, president of Gustavus Adolphus College, has received the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) 2022 Chief Executive HR Champion Award.

Recognizing that what makes an institution great are its people, this award honors a president or chancellor of a higher education institution or system who has demonstrated significant support for the institution’s human resources function. Thanks to the generous support of Segal, CUPA-HR is pleased to offer an $8,000 contribution to the Gustavus Adolphus College program of President Bergman’s choice.

In 2014, Bergman became the first female president of Gustavus Adolphus College and has worked to change the structure and priorities of the HR functions at the institution. Under President Bergman’s leadership, the HR department had an opportunity to reset. More attention was given to employee relations; a leadership program was launched to prepare future college leaders for senior leadership positions within the institution; and the department continued to improve in all areas of engagement.

President Bergman defined a new vision for Gustavus Adolphus College. The new Gustavus Acts Vision states, “Gustavus equips students to lead purposeful lives and to act on the great challenges of our time through an innovative liberal arts education of recognized excellence.” This vision has led to initiatives throughout the institution’s staff and faculty. Most recently, she has overseen the launch of several training and development programs dedicated to the support of diversity, equity and inclusion including the 2021 course offered by DiversityEDu, a workshop series facilitated by Team Dynamics, and a new series of DEI learning and engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, students and alumni. For these and many other accomplishments supporting the human resources profession, President Bergman is the deserving recipient of this award.
