Overheard at the FLSA and Legal Updates at the CUPA-HR Annual Conference
At the CUPA-HR Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. last week, I sat in on the FLSA overtime and legal update Super Sessions and “overheard” a lot of online conversation from attendees.
First, attendees joined an FLSA overtime discussion panel that included Andy Brantley, president and chief executive officer of CUPA-HR; Lynn Bynum, chief human resources officer at Bellarmine University; John Whelan, associate vice president for human resources at Indiana University; Alex Passantino, partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP; and Dr. David Weil, administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor.
This is what the attendees had to say:
“We appreciate the efforts of CUPA and its member institutions” in helping craft the final regulations of FLSA. #cupahr16

One benefit to the FLSA changes has been managers and employees talking to each other about what they do. #cupahr16

@AndyBrantley suggests using the phrase “professionals eligible for overtime.” #cupa16

Need to treat the academic professional category under the FLSA very carefully with a narrow interpretation. #cupahr16

DOL is not treating these changes as a big game of gotcha. “We understand there are complexities … with not a lot of guidance.” #cupahr16

#flsa is a matter of social justice & we are not going to jump through hoops or contort to save a few dollars … #cupahr16 super session

Afterwards, Ira Shepard, general counsel for CUPA-HR and partner at Saul Ewing updated attendees on some of the most important labor and employment law cases of 2016. Here’s what people said:
Best advice from Ira Shepard legal super session … mediate & settle — don’t go see the judges #cupahr16
