This year San Antonio not only hosted a successful basketball championship won by the San Antonio Spurs, but also a championship-caliber group of higher education HR professionals who have descended upon the city for the CUPA-HR Annual Conference and Expo 2014.

Difference makers from institutions all across the country have assembled near the city’s River Walk district to share best practices, inspire and motivate one another and network with other decision makers in our industry.

While my flight to Texas may have been delayed, opportunities to participate and be actively involved in the conference have come quickly as Day One commenced. From a CHRO workshop, Conference Onboarding for new attendees and a river cruise for young and early-career professionals, CUPA-HR has found ways to get everyone involved and engaged right out of the gate.

The bar has been set and the standard is high after learning last night from keynote speaker Steve Pemberton (author and chief diversity officer for Walgreens) that we are only as special as those who help us get ahead. I’m truly looking forward to the next few days as we prepare to dive deeper into practical HR knowledge and application in higher ed.

Institutions of higher learning are truly in for a treat as we collect relevant information that will not only make us better resources for our faculty and staff, but also able to offer solutions that will make our respective campuses stronger, increasing effectiveness and ultimately efficiency.

If you’re at the conference this week, what are you hoping to get out of the experience? If you weren’t able to join us in Texas, what do you do to find solutions to your tough HR challenges?
