Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community in Higher Ed — 3 Learning Resources for HR

June is Pride Month, and many institutions are hosting LGBTQ+ programming and events to spread the message of inclusion in higher ed. HR pros can further this message and help make LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff feel seen, heard and valued by learning about the barriers and experiences of these individuals and ways to advocate for them.

Here are three resources that will equip HR pros with the know-how to better support their institution’s LGBTQ+ communities.

  • Learn about some of the common struggles the LGBTQ+ community faces in higher ed. Rob Keel, a 2019-20 CUPA-HR Wildfire participant, shares insights HR pros can use as they work to build better DEI practices in 10 Ways to Be a Better Advocate for Your Institution’s LGBTQ Community.
  • Take part in the 21-Day Equity Habit Building Challenge: Focus on Women and the LGBTQ+ Community. Weeks three and four of the challenge explore the LGBTQ+ community in the workforce and identify opportunities to advocate for your LGBTQ+ colleagues.
  • Use the DEI Maturity Index to pinpoint areas that need more attention at your institution and explore resources that will help you form an action plan. The assessment may find that your institution could incorporate more inclusive language in policies and procedures, invest in better quality DEI resources, or improve campus culture around DEI. After completing the assessment, check out CUPA-HR’s Diversity Resources page to plan your next steps.
