“The Intersection of Leadership and Engagement: Driving Human Capital for Sustainable Performance in Higher Education ”
Stephen Hundley
Sunday, May 6 | 5:30-6:45 p.m.
Sponsored by The Prince Group of Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., Inc.
Colleges and universities are under pressure to compete for students, funding and talent; operate in environments of heightened expectations, accountability and transparency; provide education, discovery and service to diverse stakeholders; and must position themselves as nimble, flexible organizations while simultaneously preserving time-honored traditions of the Academy. To do these and many other things effectively requires ongoing commitment and exceptional contributions from employees throughout the campus. This keynote presentation will place higher education HR professionals squarely at the intersection of leadership and engagement, and will discuss ways that HR can work with colleagues from across the institution to drive human capital for sustainable performance. Research results, evidence-based best practices, fundamental concepts and emerging trends in both leadership development and employee engagement will be augmented by lively, interactive audience involvement. Attendees will leave this session ready to identify, implement, measure, improve and champion solutions focused on leadership and engagement at all levels of the campus.

“Leveraging Your Strengths at Work and In Life”
Carmela Crawford
Monday, May 7 | 8:30-9:45 a.m.
Sponsored by TIAA-CREF
With all the challenges and changes our institutions are undergoing, it is more important than ever for each of us to be operating at our peak.
New research in the area of positive psychology has shown scientific reasons why understanding your personal strengths is important and explaining the benefits you get from using those strengths.
Author Marcus Buckingham argues that rules must be broken and discarded because they stifle the originality and uniqueness — the strengths — that can enable all of us to achieve our highest performance. He says, “The best strategy for building a competitive organization is to help individuals become more of who they are.”
Keynote presenter Carmela Crawford will guide you through understanding your strengths and explain how you can discover (and use) them.
Before the presentation, conference attendees will receive a copy of Tom Rath’s book, Strengths Finder 2.0, and can take a short online assessment to pinpoint top strengths and expand your understanding of Crawford’s presentation.
During this presentation:
- Discover why you should leverage your strengths;
- Learn ways to identify those strengths; and
- Find out how to use your strengths at work and in life.
