The passage of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), also known as the Wagner Act, gave labor unions legal rights under federal law. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), an independent agency of the federal government, oversees the implementation of the NLRA by conducting labor union elections and investigating instances of unfair labor practices.

Higher Ed HR (HEHR) Perspective

Unions have existed on campuses in the U.S. for over 100 years. In the past, union news and policy updates have concerned those HR leaders with active unions on their campus; however, recent developments such as “quickie elections” and the NLRB ruling in Pacific Lutheran  have made it essential that where unions do not exist on campus, HR leaders must be proactive if unionization is to be avoided.
