In 2007, we lost our good friend, Bob Barley, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Not only was Bob a key leader for ING, a member of CUPA-HR’s Corporate Advisory Council, but he was a close friend and mentor to many of us.

He will be remembered by all for his kindness, professionalism and wisdom. He was the consummate gentleman who was very well respected in both his community and his profession. These attributes earned Bob a legendary reputation with many circles of influence across the country.

CUPA-HR’s Corporate Advisory Council has taken the lead to establish funds for the Bob Barley Memorial Conference Grant Program. Four $1,500 grants, one for a nominee in each region, will be awarded so an individual may attend a national or regional conference.

Bob Barley Memorial Conference Grant Guidelines

Grants are awarded annually to CUPA-HR members or potential members who traditionally have not had the opportunity to attend CUPA-HR educational programs. Grant monies can be used for a regional or national program and are intended for traditionally under-represented groups in the higher education HR profession.

As CUPA-HR evaluates grant applications, association members take precedence over prospective members. Grant applicants must demonstrate how they would benefit from receiving the grant. Applicants can have attended a previous program or seminar, but should express why they may not be able to attend a program without this grant.

The grant recipients must first apply grant money received to the registration cost of the program requested, with any remaining money being applied to transportation, meals and lodging expenses associated with the educational opportunity.

Process

Individuals wishing to be considered may be recommended by others or may self-nominate. Nominations are to be submitted to the CUPA-HR national office. The national office then sends all nominations to region boards for consideration according to the following timeline:

• March 2008 through June 2008 — CUPA-HR National Office and Regions announce and promote the grant opportunity and collect submissions
• June 30, 2008 — Nomination deadline
• July 31, 2008 — CUPA-HR Regions submit recipients to national office
• August 1-15, 2008 — Notification letters sent
• August 15, 2008 through June 30, 2009 — Grant recipients attend regional or national events and CUPA-HR national office processes grant reimbursements.
