CUPA-HR Leadership Opportunities

Comments from Past CUPA-HR Leaders

Serving on the CUPA-HR national board of directors has provided me with a new perspective on the governance and operation of nonprofit organizations. Now I understand from experience the challenges and issues that confront the governing board of my own institution. Experience on the board of directors has also enhanced my leadership skills, has provided me with valuable networking opportunities, has enabled me to stay on top of breaking issues, and has been an effective vehicle for me to make a meaningful contribution to the higher education human resource profession.

Kirk Beyer, CUPA-HR National Board Past Chair
Director of Human Resources, Gustavus Adolphus College
Serving on the CUPA-HR national board of directors is a truly worthwhile and engaging experience that includes building relationships with colleagues across the country and becoming deeply aware of the hot topics in higher ed HR as they happen. Board members also have a direct role in formulating the direction of the association by establishing strategic initiatives and projects that move the industry and profession ahead.

Wendy Davis, Former CUPA-HR National Board Member
Chief Human Resource Officer, Central Wyoming College
Being involved so intimately with the governance process of an organization that you have been a member of for years and support strongly is wonderful. Serving on the national board of CUPA-HR has provided me the "eagle's" view of what is occurring in our professional organization; given me the opportunity to contribute in some small way to its growth and development and a chance to build new, long-lasting relationships throughout higher education around the country. I am glad I said yes when I was asked to serve. When anyone has said and done it all, service should be the hallmark of us all.

Hosea Long, Former CUPA-HR National Board Member
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
During my time years on the national board we wrestled with ethical codes, governance structures, business models, corporate relations, and marketing plans. In many ways it was like going through an MBA program. I learned a lot; I grew a lot; and I had the opportunity to form professional relationships with colleagues around the world. There is no question that I am a stronger professional and leader thanks to my experience.

Allison Vaillancourt, Former CUPA-HR National Board Chair
Vice President for Human Resources, The Univeristy of Arizona
Serving on the national board has provided me numerous opportunities to contribute to the advancement of our association that provides vast support and resources to our profession. It has been most gratifying to meet many HR people who are making a difference at their institutions advancing our core values in action.

Barbara Wilson, Former CUPA-HR National Board Member
